Denis Branan "Oige" Keane (March 25, 1992 – July 22, 2009) was an Irish-American musician and songwriter, sometimes going by the pen name Omra O'Catháin. Oige was born in the Central Valley but lived his entire life in the Santa Ynez Valley in California. His primary instrument was the viola and he had been planning on pursuing a career as a concert violist. Oige was also proficient at violin, guitar, harmonica and other instruments.
Oige played viola in the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony and participated in the Music Academy of the West's MERIT Program. He enjoyed singing in the Old Mission Santa Inés Youth Choir, the Santa Ynez High School Choir, or just with friends. He was involved in many activities in Santa Barbara County. Oige raised a guide-dog puppy, Glorianne, for Guide Dogs for the Blind and the Santa Barbara Sightseers. He was a Life Scout, working on his Eagle rank, and a member of Troop 41 in Ballard. He was SCUBA certified and enjoyed exploring the waters of Catalina Island. Oige attended Ballard School from Kindergarten to Sixth Grade, Los Olivos School for junior high and was a member of the Santa Ynez High School Class of 2010.
Oige loved the outdoors, especially feeling a close connection to the forest and the desert. On July 22, 2009, Oige left his home in Los Olivos on an 8 mile bike ride up Figueroa Road. Presumably, Oige left his bike at the road and continued his journey by foot, up Biradet Canyon. After a number of hours, Oige's family became worried and alerted authorities. Oige's body was found the following morning by search and rescue volunteers. On July 30, 2009, members of the community remembered Oige's life in a gathering at the Presbyterian Church in Ballard.
Early life
Oige was born on March 25, 1992 in Tulare District Hospital to Denis Francis Keane, a master carpenter and housebuilder from Cork, Ireland, and Joann Keane, a veterinarian from Los Angeles, California. Oige's older brother, Liam Joseph Keane, had been born five years prior in San Diego, California. Ten days after Oige's birth, the Keane family relocated from Tulare where Joann had been working in the dairy industy of the Central Valley to Los Olivos, California on a ranch on Foxen Canyon Road. Oige and his family would remain in the Santa Ynez Valley for the rest of his life.
After some time on Foxen Canyon, the Keane's moved -briefly to the town of Los Alamos- and then to a house on Lewis Street in Ballard. Oige began Kindergarten at Ballard School in the Little Red Schoolhouse in 1997. Oige explored the creek in Ballard and nursed a wounded scrub-jay named Squirt back to health.
